Piano Solo

GCMTA Music Day Literature and Performance Requirements – Piano Solo

  1. Students are to perform two original selections of contrasting style and period. A piece by a contemporary master composer may be paired with a teaching piece (for example: Kabelevsky and Martha Mier).
  2. Pieces need not be of contrasting periods if the student has not yet attained the level of playing easier works of master composers and the following requirements are met:
    • Both pieces contrast in style.
    • Both pieces are original works with a minimum of 12 measures.
    • Pieces are composed by different composers.
    • Pieces may not be selected from the same method (Piano Adventures, Alfred, Bastien, etc.) due to the difficulty in verifying the composer in methods with multiple composers.
  3. Foreign or American folk tune arrangements, hymn arrangements, pop arrangements, and simplifications of larger works are NOT allowed. Please note that quotation of a folk tune or other familiar tune within an original piece will generally be acceptable.
  4. A single movement from a sonata or suite may count as one piece and must be completed in its entirety. Also, several movements, including selections from theme and variations, may be grouped to count as a single piece. Any other sectional pieces, such as fantasies, must be performed in their entirety.
  5. Memorization of all pieces is required. Those who do not meet the repertoire or memorization requirements may enter “for comments only.”
  6. Students must provide the judge with an original score of the music with measures numbered. The teacher’s name should be deleted from the score. All music used must comply with copyright regulations.
