GCMTA Music Day Literature and Performance Requirements – Voice (Art Song and Musical Theatre)

Art Song:

  1. Vocalists will perform two contrasting pieces from vocal Art Song teaching repertoire. In grades10-12, one of the pieces must be an Art Song in a foreign language.
  2. Arrangements of folk tunes and spirituals ARE acceptable. Broadway/Musical Theatrerepertoire is NOT acceptable.
  3. In a song with multiple verses, the number of verses to be performed will be left to the discretion of the teacher.
  4. Vocalists must supply their own accompanist or recorded accompaniment and equipment.
  5. Memorization of all pieces is required. Those who do not meet the repertoire or memorization requirements may enter “for comments only.”
  6. Students must provide the judge with an original score of the music with measures numbered.
  7. The teacher’s name should be deleted from the score. All music used must comply with copyright regulations.

Musical Theatre:

  1. Vocalists will perform two contrasting pieces from Musical Theatre or Disney-type film productions. Both selections may be from the same musical or film score provide they are contrasting in style.
  2. Only compositions in their original form and published keys will be acceptable with the exception that teachers may choose a different key of the original form that best suits the student’s voice type.
  3. In a song with multiple verses, the number of verses to be performed will be left to the discretion of the teacher.
  4. Arrangements of folk tunes and spirituals, and selections from pop/rock-style musicals are NOT acceptable as Musical Theatre repertoire.
  5. Singing in a heavy “belting” voice is highly discouraged.
  6. Vocalists must supply their own accompanist or recorded accompaniment and equipment.
  7. Memorization of all pieces is required. Those who do not meet the repertoire or memorization requirements may enter “for comments only.”
  8. Students must provide the judge with an original score of the music with measures numbered. The teacher’s name should be deleted from the score. All music used must comply with copyright regulations.
