{"id":40,"date":"2015-06-15T10:54:13","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T10:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gcmta.org\/?page_id=40"},"modified":"2026-08-06T09:51:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T13:51:38","slug":"auditions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gcmta.org\/home\/index\/student-activities\/auditions","title":{"rendered":"Auditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>GMTA Local Auditions<\/h1>\n<p>The Georgia Music Teachers Association holds an annual music competition (State Auditions) to recognize the top students in various instrumental disciplines for school grades 4-12. This is a competitive event with high performance and literature levels. While all other instruments have one, state-wide event, the Pre-College piano event includes two preliminary events and requires passing a theory exam.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>GCMTA Local Auditions<\/b>\u00a0provide piano students in\u00a0<b>Grades 4\u201311<\/b>\u00a0with an opportunity to perform before a qualified adjudicator, receive written feedback, and qualify for advancement to the Regional Auditions. Students designated as\u00a0<b>Outstanding Performers (OP)<\/b>\u00a0at the local level may advance to the Regional Auditions, provided they also satisfy the\u00a0<b>GMTA Theory Exam (GATE)<\/b>\u00a0requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The GATE theory exam is offered in conjunction with this event, but requires a separate registration. For additional information visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiamta.org\">Georgia MTA website.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Order Lunch<\/h2>\n<p>Click here to complete the <a title=\"Gwinnett County Local Auditions Lunch Order-2026\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gcmta.org\/machform\/view.php?id=18152\">Gwinnett County Local Auditions Lunch Order Form.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lunch order deadline: February 16, 2027.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers should send lunch payment to\u00a0<b>Kathy Dawal\u00a0<\/b>(Zelle preferred)<\/li>\n<li>Additional lunch information will be provided by email.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Teacher Requirements<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Teachers entering students must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a current\u00a0<b>GCMTA member<\/b>\u00a0with dues paid by the registration deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Register students through the GMTA online registration system (<b>gmta.tenutoweb.com<\/b>).<\/li>\n<li>Pay the registration fee (<b>$25 per student<\/b>).<\/li>\n<li>Payment may be made online or by check. Checks must be received by the registration deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Mail checks to:<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mandy Reynolds, Executive Director, GMTA<br \/>1794 Lake Heights Circle<br \/>Dacula, GA 30019<\/p>\n<p>Teachers are also required to work during the Local Auditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1\u20135 students:<\/b>\u00a0Half-day assignment<\/li>\n<li><b>6 or more students:<\/b>\u00a0Full-day assignment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No substitutes are permitted.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers who are unable to fulfill their work assignment may pay an exemption fee:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>$50<\/b>\u00a0(half day)<\/li>\n<li><b>$100<\/b>\u00a0(full day)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Failure to fulfill the work requirement will result in students receiving comments only and becoming ineligible for Outstanding Performer (OP) status.<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Student Requirements<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Eligibility<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students in\u00a0<b>Grades 4\u201311<\/b>\u00a0are eligible to participate.<\/li>\n<li><b>Grade 12<\/b> students register directly for the State Auditions and do not participate in the Local or Regional Auditions but must pass the GATE or be exempt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Required Repertoire<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Students must perform\u00a0<b>two memorized piano works<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One work from the\u00a0<b>Baroque or Classical period (through Beethoven)<\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>One work from the\u00a0<b>Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary period<\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b>\u00a0Contemporary pedagogical repertoire is considered\u00a0<i>Contemporary<\/i>\u00a0regardless of style. Please refer to the\u00a0<b>Pre-College Piano<\/b>\u00a0guidelines on the GMTA website for complete repertoire requirements.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Theory Requirement (GATE)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Unless exempt, students must register separately for the\u00a0<b>Georgia Auditions Theory Exam (GATE)<\/b>\u00a0through the GMTA website (<b>georgiamta.org<\/b>). The GATE exam will be administered on the day of the Local Auditions.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Rules<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrive\u00a0<b>20 minutes<\/b>\u00a0before your scheduled audition time.<\/li>\n<li><b>Bring the original printed scores for both pieces, with all measures numbered. (<\/b>Photocopies and scores downloaded from free public-domain websites are\u00a0<b>not permitted<\/b>).<\/li>\n<li>Remove the names of both the student and teacher from all music.<\/li>\n<li>Auditions are\u00a0<b>closed to spectators<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Teachers, students, and parents may not identify themselves to or communicate with the judge.<\/li>\n<li>The judge&#8217;s decision is final.<\/li>\n<li>Students who receive the\u00a0<b>Outstanding Performer (OP)<\/b>\u00a0designation are eligible to advance to the Regional Auditions, subject to GMTA requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Students advancing to the Regional and State Auditions must perform the\u00a0<b>same repertoire<\/b>\u00a0presented at the Local Auditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Additional Information<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Every participant receives a certificate and written adjudication comments.<\/li>\n<li>Students are evaluated only within their grade level.<\/li>\n<li>Award categories include:\n<ul>\n<li><b>Outstanding Performer (OP)<\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Award of Excellence (AE)<\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Honorable Mention (HM)<\/b><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Students who receive the\u00a0<b>Outstanding Performer (OP)<\/b>\u00a0designation will receive a trophy.
